Wakashachiya - The Central

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
The import from Nagoya specialising in curry udon. They do serve other things but the menu isnt that extensive and since we're there might as well order what they're famous for...

its not that bad but its not that good either...
udon is thick and chewy but the gravy is a lil too "thin"...
i dont find it spicy at all... but one of us was actually sweating profusely trying to gobble down the bowl... hahahhaha

note. get a seat near the tv monitor... they play the company jinggle over and over again... featuring a turban-wearing-butt-wriggling mascot... its beyond cute! XD

Matsu - Northbridge, Sydney

A newly opened Japanese restaurant at Northbridge (a short walk from Northbridge Plaza). It's Korean-run (not again...argh), but I'm always keen to try out new restaurants. Plus, I feel pity for them, because they haven't got much customers yet - somehow I felt obliged to help them get the ball rolling.

Tempura Udon

-> Something I've been craving for weeks. Tempura udon is a pretty common dish, but somehow, I haven't came across any in weeks, so I was ecstatic when I saw that this restaurant has it on their menu.

Presentation-wise, I thought they could do better - I actually prefer them placing the tempura above the udon itself instead of serving them on a separate dish. Also, I'm not too happy about the addition of tempura bits on the udon soup - I think it's redundant, although it's pretty common to do so. My stomach does not handle tempura very well - if I eat too much, I will get nauseous (probably because the tempura crumbs has high oil content).

At AUD 14, I think it's a tad pricey for such a simple dish in a simple restaurant.

Daruma - Haymarket, Sydney

A rather hurried lunch. The place is kind of objectionable because it's packed with noisy teenagers (most likely UTS Insearch students on lunch break - the restaurant is, after all, located on the same building as UTS Insearch), but the staff is amazingly friendly. The okusan (proprietress) personally greets every guests from her cashier desk, which makes you really feel like you're in a small family-run restaurant in Japan.

Oyako don and udon set

-> Definitely something that one can consume on daily basis. It's light, un-pretentious, perfect for frequent consumption (without eventually getting sick of it)

Rating: 7.5/10

Agemono set

-> Deep-fried stuff. Chicken, fish, prawn patty. The main dish is nothing to rave about, but what I particularly like is the agedashi tofu, which tastes really home-made (believe me, I know). Food just like mama makes it. Well. It's not that my mama is Japanese, but you know.

Yokozuna - Yau Ma Tei, Hong Kong

Hiyashi Tempura Udon

-> Yum-my. It's incredible. Perfect for hot, humid weather. It's the first time I've eaten hiyashi udon (honestly, I wasn't even aware of the existence of other varieties of hiyashi dishes other than hiyashi chuuka-men).

A little bit about the restaurant...I just love this place. Really reminds me of Japan because of its super-cramped space. The chefs are really from Japan, and so are some of the waitresses. Long, long queues at nights (the place opens till 2 am). Great late-night eatery in vibrant Mong Kok area.

Fujiya - Sydney

Post-cinema dinner.

Service was extra disoriented tonight. Luckily we're in a relatively good mood.

We also agreed that ending the night with a lil' tipsy tone would probably be fun.

Ozeki Hana-awaka (sparkling flower) sake

-> Disappointingly weak. So, we ordered...

Go-shu Premium Sake

.....still not strong enough. But oh well.

Kimuchi chahan

Nabeyaki udon

-> It's nice. The shiitake is sweet and probably pre-soaked in mirin, shoyu, and dashi. And they also have this ingenious way to prevent the tempura from plunging into the broth by placing it above a bed of sliced konbu arranged like tiles.

Dining Bar KASUMI - Sydney

Izakaya-style cuisine.

There's this group of Japanese salarymen that hit on this innocent-looking waitress.

Salaryman: "Neechannnn...namae wa nan-sska??" (what's your name, miss??)
Waitress (in surprisingly HEAVY, DEEP voice): "Ayano desu." (Ayano.)

*awkward silence*

Wafu Steak Set
-> The dipping sauce was so yummy.

Sushi Tei - Plaza Senayan, Jakarta

Tori Nabe
-> I just looove the tofu inside this hotpot! It's actually those inarizushi skin-type tofu (my mouth waters already!!)

Beef Katsu Teishoku
-> My self-made one is better...

Niku Udon
-> My brother's favorite.
