1-hour transit in Bangkok? If I don't grab a bite (even though I wasn't so hungry, and to think that I'll have a meal in my next flight anyway), I'll surely regret it.

-> It's good, although the price was astronomical. Everything in Suvarnabhumi airport is overpriced. More so than London Heathrow. And also, notice the sprig of shallots? The main difference between pad thai sold in Thailand and outside Thailand is, well, the overseas version usually has the shallots chopped and fried with the noodle, but the Thai version has little to no shallots in the pad thai, but rather, whole sprigs of fresh shallots are served on the side. And yes, you're supposed to take bites of them while you eat your pad thai. The very thought nauseates me.

The green onion on the side is the trad. way of doing it and it is not as in-yr-face as you might imagine. Tropical alliums are not nearly as pungent as their temperate climate cousins. For example, in Thailand it is typical to put 10 cloves of garlic into a single dish. This would be inedible with typical Australian garlic but with Thai garlic it is just fine. Also Thai onions tend to be sweeter rather than hotter. But yr absolutely right about the over-pricing in Suvarnabhumi - there's a normally-priced mini-mart on the mezzanine level - and the staff canteen is reasonable value. It is outside and at the extreme left (when facing the bldg). Enjoying your work -keep it up ...
Yes - I agree with you. Vegetables and spices in tropical countries aren't as strong as in temperate countries. However, I still wouldn't dare taking a bite out of a whole sprig of shallot!
It's weird how I can eat LOTS of shallot when in chopped form, but not when I have to take a bite off a whole sprig.
